On Thursday, Sept. 5th the City Council is holding its only public hearing on the Mayor's 11B jail plan on the same day as back to school. That's why we need to show up stronger than ever, in spite of their efforts to make sure people don't speak out against the plan.
On Tuesday, September 3rd, the City Planning Commission will vote on Mayor Bill de Blasio's plan to expand New York City's carceral system by building four new skyscraper jails in our boroughs and a number of smaller jail outposts in our hospitals.
Come and learn all about what Major de Blasio's borough-based jail expansion plan is, why No New Jails is against it, and how No New Jails is fighting back against it. This event takes place at the same time de Blasio is on CNN at a town hall about his presidential campaign. We will also ensure, through social media, that his violent jail expansion plan will not be swept under the rug.
No New Jails NYC is a network of residents, community members, and activists fighting Mayor de Blasio’s jail expansion plan. NNJ calls for the immediate closure of Rikers without building new jails. Instead of spending billions on more jails, we call for massive investment to address the needs of communities targeted by criminalization. We organize towards a safer NYC free of confinement and surveillance and filled with opportunities for all people to thrive.
